The sustainable seafood opportunity

The increasing demand for sustainable seafood is creating market opportunities for innovations in fishing and aquaculture. The global seafood market is currently worth $400 billion, 90% of the top retail chains in North America have made commitments to source sustainable seafood, and seafood is among the fastest-growing areas of the food sector.

Since we launched Fish 2.0 in 2013, we have seen both the number and quality of innovative ventures grow rapidly. We have worked with more than 500 ventures and 400 investors around the world, and expect this growth trend to continue accelerating.

Why investors join Fish 2.0

Becoming a member of the Fish 2.0 network allows investors and industry experts to connect with their peers and other leaders in this field. They gain access to crucial information and data on deals and trends in the sector. The membership site will open for new members in early 2019, with benefits that include:

  • Opportunities to connect virtually and in-person with finalist ventures from Fish 2.0 and with other investors who share an interest in fisheries and aquaculture investments.
  • Access to businesses, experts and investor peers who can provide insights for seafood industry investments.
  • Exploring how foundations and investors can work together on an ongoing basis.
  • Access to Fish 2.0 events, including the Global Innovation Forum & Finals to be held in California in late fall of 2019. Meet the top 40 global competitor businesses in person, hear their pitches, and network with a range of investors and experts who share your interests.

Membership opportunities will open in early 2019. Please sign up on our mailing list to receive early notification.

Online judging

Investors and industry leaders can gain even earlier access to innovations and deals — and also help shape the sector’s most promising ventures — by serving as an online judge in one or more of the Fish 2.0 regional and global tracks. Previous judges tell us they had fun throughout the process and learned from their interactions with up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Discounts on events will be offered to investors and experts who are selected to help with online judging during the competition.

As an early stage investor in the sustainable seafood sector, I need to be connected to the entire ecosystems, ranging from entrepreneurial teams, to other early stage investors, to mentors and advisors for these teams, to industry experts and customers, to downstream investors.  Participating is Fish 2.0 as a judge, mentor and investor has made connecting easy, at both the local and global level.  The few hours a week involved more than repay themselves with access to great opportunities and great people throughout the sustainable seafood network

RSF has a long track record of investing in sustainable food and agriculture and while we see the ‘sustainable fish sector’ as a critical piece of this work – its challenges, risks and opportunities are so unique that we cannot simply apply the same investment lens. Working with Fish 2.0 as an online judge and advisor has given us amazing exposure to great companies/pipeline but more importantly it has given us the opportunity to educate ourselves on the sector which has helped us to make better investment decisions in our own portfolio. It is one of the few engagements where I learn more each year that I participate and the colleagues that Monica brings together is unmatched in the food and agriculture space.
