New England Seafood Businesses: Apply Now for February Fish 2.0 Workshop

Three-day program in Boston area provides business-building advice and training, plus a head start on applying for the global Fish 2.0 competition; workshop applications are due Jan.

Fish 2.0 will hold a free three-day business development workshop for New England seafood businesses at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts, Feb. 6–8, 2017. Participants will learn how to communicate about their business in a way that attracts interest, practice pitching to investors and buyers, and get advice on integrating social and environmental sustainability into their business strategy. The one-page workshop application, available at, is due by Jan. 6.

The workshop is open to New England–based start-ups and established businesses focused on wild-capture seafood fisheries (including all finfish and shellfish) or on traceability, transparency, and supply chain innovation (local or global), such as new sources of fish feed for aquaculture. Attendees are not required to participate in the Fish 2.0 competition, but they will get a head start on the application and learn what investors want.

“The workshop really opened up a new perspective for me on how I can improve my business and interact with investors” and was the “best investment training I’ve ever been to,” said two prior workshop participants. “The accelerator I’ve been participating in was general, [so] it was really wonderful to have seafood-specific questions guiding me toward seafood-specific investors,” said another.

Over 60 percent of Fish 2.0 participants gain new investment, partners, or customers

The Fish 2.0 business competition connects seafood businesses from around the world with investors, giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to win cash prizes, gain international visibility, find strategic partners, and attract new investments. Investors, seafood industry leaders, and foundations support the competition and interact with participating businesses.

In the 2017 competition, the top three businesses from a dedicated New England track will be invited to pitch to investors at the November final event at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Over 60 percent of the enterprises participating in Fish 2.0 2015 gained investment, new partners, or new customers from connections they made during this event.

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton will open the workshop

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, of the 6th District of Massachusetts, will kick off the workshop. “I’m proud to represent a region with a history and livelihood so inextricably linked to fishing,” said Moulton. “Welcoming the Fish 2.0 workshop in my district is a huge opportunity for us to show how we’re leading the way in sustainable, innovative solutions to challenges facing the fishing industry. This workshop will allow participants to gain valuable business development skills and enable them to partner more effectively with investors.
