What a difference a year makes, especially in the life of a startup. About a year ago, we met Salty Girl Seafood and Bureo, two fledgling social enterprises and winners of the Fish 2.0 business competition. Since then, both have expanded and, as often happens with startups, discovered opportunities in unexpected places.
Salty Girl was co-founded in 2014 by fish and ocean lovers Norah Eddy and Laura Johnson, who met while enrolled at University of California, Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. The goal: to build a company selling sustainably sourced and traceable fish, the better to boost demand for small, local fisheries engaging in sustainable practices. To that end, the company sells portioned, pre-marinated fish to supermarkets; the packaging contains information with which you can trace the product back to the original fishing community.
